The Political Economy of AI

Description

Artificial Intelligence (AI)—and generative artificial intelligence (genAI) in particular—are dramatically transforming contemporary economies and societies. From upheavals on the labor market to the creative destruction of entire sectors, from geoeconomic competition to regulatory responses, from narratives of superabundance to stories of imminent doom: the rise and rapid diffusion of AI raises fundamental questions at the intersection of (geo-)politics and the economy.

In an emerging research agenda I try to better understand the (geo-)political economy of artificial from a variety of perspectives. One is to better understand the transformation of markets and platforms, entrepreneurship and regulation brought about by agentic AI. Another one is the application of (generative) artificial intelligence to biotechnology and the political and societal challenges this raises, from AI-assisted medical research to AI applications in therapy, from mind-reading technology to animal sound translation.
